Edward Cornwell (b. 3-Dec-1815 – d. 25-May-1883) – my 4th Great Grandfather.

Edward Cornwell was born in Dorking, Surrey, England. His parents were William John Cornwall (b. Abt 1781) and Elizabeth Ware (b. 5-Sep-1781). On 2-Aug-1832, Edward married Lucy Lucas (b. Abt 1822 – 20-Dec-1891). In England, they had a daughter Mary Ann (b. 1837) and son John (b. 14-Apr-1839). According to the 1841 Surrey Census (ref; HO 107/1081/6), the family lived in Charts Lane in the Parish of Dorking, Surrey. Edward was an Agricutural Labourer.

Their son John was not present on the 1841 Surrey Census nor listed on the Australian emmigration documentation of the family and therefore must have died before he was two. After the death of their son, Edward, Lucy and Mary Ann emmigranted to Australia (ref; Bounty Immigrants from 1840-1849 – AL/2144). They travelled to Australia on the “EARL OF DURHAM” in 1842, which departed London 10-Feb-1842 and arrived in Port Phillip 18-Jun-1842.

After arriving in Australia they settled in China Mans Flats (near Timor, Victoria, Australia). Edward went on to have several more children in Australia, Elizabeth R Cornwell (1844-13-Jan-1853), John Cornwell (17-Sep-1846 – 19-Aug-1924), Edward Cornwell (27-Jul-1849 – 1914) – my 3rd Great Grandfather, John Lucas Cornwill (25-Nov-1851 – 11-Mar-1853) and Ann Elizabeth Cornwill (03-Nov-1853-?).

Edward died in Chinaman’s Flat in 1883, he was 67.

When Edward arrived in Australia he was employed by Henry Dendy who was the original land owner for the town of Brighton. At the time Edward was listed in the Brighton rate book, and was living in New St Brighton.
Edward is also mentioned in a book titled ” Henry Dendy and his immigrants” by L.A Schumer, i was advised that this book is no longer available and is out of print.
Edward remained in Brighton at least until 1853 all his children born in Australia were born in Brighton, a son James Lucas and daughter Elizabeth R are both buried in unmarked graves at the rear of St Andrews Church in Brighton. I went to the grave yard in 1992 and could not find the graves but records showed that, this was the final resting place of the children.
Edward then moved to Chinaman’s flats exact date is not known at this time.

!HIS CAUSE OF DEATH WAS DIABETTES, AT THE LAST KNOWN OCCUPATION OF EDWARD HE WAS
    !LISTED AS BEING A MINER.
